The MV Emsland, carrying 1,776 tonnes of logs ran aground on the Annat Bank in the River South Esk after leaving the port of Montrose. She is taking in water in two ballast tanks.

All attempts to refloat the vessel have failed.

Officers of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and the secretary of state’s representative arrived in Montorse on Tuesday to set up a salvage control unit to oversee the salvage of the ship.

“Every effort is being made to recover the vessel and its bunkers with minimal impact to the environment,” said the MCA’s Fred Caygill.

The ship ran aground on December 29.
