New branding, improved manufacturing and better grading will boost market opportunities in Scotland for Scots pine, a new report has said.

The study, written by Napier University’s Centre for Timber Engineering for the Forestry Commission, highlights five key areas for market growth of home-grown Scots pine, including “massive” timber construction, external cladding, wood modification, playground equipment and stress-laminated bridges.

To take advantage of these, the report recommends investigating branding some Scots pine products as Caledonian pine, or linking the material to the estate or locality it is sourced from.
