Södra Timber’s Traryd sawmill is switching from spruce to pine products.

“Sawing pine in Traryd gives us better opportunities in a weak economy, and is also right in the long term as Södra Timber needs to increase the amount of pine in its mix,” said Peter Nilsson, Södra Timber president.

The changes will involve 35 staff being made redundant at Traryd and a reduction in shifts from two to one, which will mean volumes falling from 100,000m³ to 50,000m³ annually.

Spruce products will gradually transfer to the Långasjö sawmill, including a contract for the Dutch market. Shift changes will be implemented in March.

A total of 50 redundancies are being made at the two mills, with a further 12 temporary workers also being laid off.
