A £250,000 storage investment by Transit Medway will see the removal of the “shed inside a shed” at Rochester.

The small shed underneath a larger 75,000ft² hangar has, Transit Medway admitted, become an in-joke in the industry since the larger building’s erection five years ago.

“We had always intended to demolish the old shed, but it has always been in use for other products so up to now there’s never been an opportunity, said managing director Mark Lay.

The demolition, new concrete flooring, improved lighting and further weather protection will result in a single span 12,000m³ capacity shed.

“A big increase in quality undercover space, plus the fact that our costs will not be affected by the port rates issue means we will be in a strong position to take advantage of the upturn in volumes which must eventually come,” added Mr Lay.
