Ghana has introduced an electronic export permit system in a bid to reduce abuse by exporters, officials said.
All applications now have to be made by the clearing agent or forwarder to the Timber Industry Development Division through the Ghana Community Network and Ghana Customs Management system. Both check the information against the declaration made by the exporter.
The new system was brought in after evidence of increasing abuse by exporters using practices that allowed the exporter to manually develop and complete export permit invoices.
