Plum Creek is closing its Evergreen stud sawmill and stud re-manufacturing plant indefinitely on June 26.
The company had only re-started the stud sawmill on May 4 after being curtailed since January. The remanufacturing plant had been operating on one shift.
Plum Creek said the closures were down to a lack of demand and 63 employees will lose their jobs.
“The housing market remains dormant for new construction, which is directly tied to the wood products we make at the Evergreen plants,” said Rick Holley, Plum Creek president and CEO.
However, a slight improvement in prices for pine boards made at the Columbia Falls sawmill is expected to provide sufficient revenue to continue operations at the facility, but only by also cutting the 130-strong workforce by 23 employees.
Columbia Falls re-started in early March after a two-month shutdown.
