EWD’s response to the recession is simple – invest more and improve your products.

Marcus Kanis, EWD’s head of marketing, said the company had a new exhibition stand and had invested a lot in its sales force to become more effective.

“If there is not much work you can’t create work by magic,” said Mr Kanis. “But we can make sure we are improving our product and we are watching the market carefully.”

Technology on display included OptiDrive high-production edger optimiser systems, which uses cameras and lasers to scan boards and the position of wane. To improve wood recovery, boards can be edged by CNC-controlled saws at a diagonal path, differing from the machine centre line.

The DWK SG/ZE universal sawing centres, with a capacity of 20,000-80,000m³ logs per year, are aimed at smaller mills. It can handle log diameters up to 700/800mm and features excess height cutters, adjustable in height with the saw arbors.

EWD has completed several UK installations through its UK representative River Dee Machinery, including at Charles Ransford and Thomson Sawmills.
