More than 30 members of the newly formed North East Timber Trade Association (NETTA) turned out to hear TRADA Technology managing director Andrew Abbott lecture on Innovation in the Timber Trade.

Mr Abbott traced the use of timber structures from the 19th century to the present day.

NETTA chairman Richard Gore said: “The contrast between timber usage in Europe compared to the UK was marked, but the fast developing timber frame housing construction sector was just one example of a changing culture that saw timber as a renewable resource.”

Among the audience was a representative from St Mary’s College, Hull which is working with NETTA to develop its own courses up to GCSE level which will include a strong element of timber design and construction.

Mr Gore said: “It is our intention to continue to arrange meetings of this kind that give out important information to our membership whilst working closely with educational institutions.”
