Eight men have been charged with piracy and kidnapping in connection with the disappearance of the timber-carrying Arctic Sea.

Russian authorities made the announcement after questioning the men and members of the Arctic Sea crew.

The ship had been carrying 6,700m³ of redwood joinery timber to Algeria when it went missing for two weeks in August. It was finally located by the Russian navy near Cape Verde.

Finland-based Rets Timber had been exporting the wood, produced from a variety of Finnish sawmillers, on a timber route to North Africa when the hijacking occurred, although the precise circumstances of the hijack remain shrouded in mystery.
