The Institute of Wood Science is on the threshold of exciting opportunities following its merger with the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM³), new chairman Charles Trevor said last week.

Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the council of the new IWSc – The Wood Technology Society, as it is now known, Mr Trevor said the move also provided opportunities for the wider timber industry.

“IOM³ has associations that will help us to raise the profile of wood. There’s scope to provide a loud voice to influence and advise the public, government and academia,” he said. “We’re good at telling ourselves how wonderful wood is but we are not good at telling others. We need to communicate wood and technology.”

And he urged members to get involved in the new society. While IOM³ shoulders the adminstrative burden “it’s up to us to shape the society”. “We will only be successful if members get involved actively. It’s up to us to put forward plans for wood education,” said Mr Trevor.
