Pakistan is to embark on a mammoth tree-planting campaign during the monsoon season in a bid to meet the growing population’s future timber and fuel needs.

The government aims to plant more than 39.5 million saplings during the next seven years, including about 200,000 in and around Islamabad. The campaign will cost an estimated Rs1.15bn.

A further Rs193.5m has been earmarked for a five-year forestry sector research and development programme.
