Forest mapping and timber tracking technology will be thrust into the spotlight during the much-heralded UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen next month.

As world leaders use the December 7-18 conference to try to agree a climate deal, Helveta’s CI World technology will be showcased at the Forest Day 3 event in Copenhagen, organised by the Centre for International Forestry Research to coincide with the conference meetings.

Helveta CEO Patrick Newton said the eyes of the world would be on Copenhagen, giving the company an opportunity to raise awareness of its work to map and protect forest assets.

He said carbon reduction within the forestry sector was an important theme at this year’s conference, pointing to the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries (REDD) scheme, which involves paying poorer tropical forested countries not to cut down their forests.

Helveta says its CI Earth ground-based mapping application can be used to gather information and provide sub-canopy verification of the continued existence of forest assets on the ground as part of any future carbon sequestration monitoring.

The company will also participate in a further Copenhagen event – “How to implement a carbon finance mechanism: the monitoring of forest assets”, which will look at how best to measure and monitor forests that will underpin any carbon financing mechanism for forest conservation.
