SCA sales director Stephen King has advised social housing procurement managers that collaboration across the supply chain can result in products that are fit for purpose, create the least waste and produce the least carbon emissions.

Speaking at Procurement for Housing’s annual conference, “Collaboration, the mother of innovation”, Mr King said housing associations should involve suppliers at the design stage in new-build, or when reviewing repair and maintenance.

“As forest owners and wood producers, resource efficiency is a by-word at SCA,” he said. “We help customers to create better products, selecting appropriate logs, optimising yield from cutting, innovating as necessary in production flows, and minimising transport. From carbon-mapping our products, we can show the cost benefit of improving ordering and delivery patterns, and the cost and carbon burden of add-ons like shrink wrapping.

“At each stage in the chain there are choices to be made. I challenge you all to achieve true ‘best value’ through greater efficiency in the timber supply chain,” he concluded.
