Tilhill forest manager Andrew Heald says the timber industry could benefit from growing valuable black walnut and black cherry.
Mr Heald, who manages forests in Wales, said he was impressed with harvesting of the species during a recent month-long visit to Pennsylvania studying timber production.
He said black cherry, used widely for veneer, was achieving prices of US$1,000 a log and could be harvested in 60 years, much quicker than oak.
Mr Heald also reports that American foresters are experiencing problems with pests, including gypsy moth affecting oak and hemlock blighted with adelgid.
