Western red cedar shingles supplied by John Brash have been fitted onto conical roofs at a new £1.4m craft centre in Wakefield which has been entered into RIBA awards.

Roofing contractor Harwood Roofing said the conical shape meant the shingles were fitted directly onto the membrane instead of using battens.

Spawforth Architects chose cedar shingles because of their lightness and ability to create the complex geometries needed on the roof, with the shingles able to be used on a pitch as low as 14º.

The craft centre forms part of the Pennine Camphill Community – a not-for-profit charity based in a 35-acre countryside setting.
