Pontrilas Timber, which recently completed a £6m refurbishment of one of its sawmills in Herefordshire, is to further boost its mate-rials handling capability.

The company, which runs a hardwood and softwood sawmill on a 24-acre site in Pontrilas, has three Liebherr wheeled loading shovels on long-term rental and is taking delivery of a pick-and-carry handler.

The new addition, a Liebherr A 924 C Litronic pick-and carry materials handler, joins two L 542 hydrostatic drive loaders equipped with log grabs and one with a special high volume quick-hitch bucket.

The company estimates 170,000m³ of logs a year will be moved from the log yard and grading line to the mills. The bucket loader will be used for moving, stockpiling and loading wood chips, sawdust and bark for board manufacture and biofuel.

The loaders are 13-tonne machines with a tipping load of 9,760kg.

Pontrilas Timber produces a range of products for markets including heavy industry, agriculture and horticulture, furniture and timber frame buildings. It recently completed a major refurbishment of the softwood sawmill, which produces kiln dried graded eased edged timber as well as fencing and industrial timbers, and upgraded the hardwood mill.
