Western US forests have reportedly been considered as targets by terrorist group Al-Qaeda.

The claim was made by an Al-Qaeda detainee and then relayed by the FBI to law enforcement agencies.

Apparently, the plan was for three or four Al-Qaeda operatives to plant timed explosives in forests and grasslands and then flee the country.

US National Forest sources said fires started in the right places could be devastating, destroying homes and commercial timber areas, as well as taking up large amount of resources in fire-fighting.

However, the FBI and other US security organisations have not been able to evaluate the accuracy of the information.
