TRADA Technology senior structural engineer Dr Keerthi Ranasinghe has urged young engineers to take advantage of the opportunities offered by Eurocode 5.

Dr Ranasinghe told engineers that although the code would not change the way engineers designed, it would change the way they did calculations. EC5 is not yet referred to in Part A, but BS 5268 is no longer supported by BSI.

And he said the industry appeared to be holding back, with only a handful of champions designing to Eurocode 5, with everyone waiting for others to make the first move.

He admitted there were apparently more challenges and opportunities within EC5 but it was “arguably the best code ever”.

EC5 also made it easy for new products to be accepted under the code in a way that was impossible under BS 5268, he said.
