Global sawlog prices rose 17% in the past 12 months, according to Wood Resource Quarterly.

The Global Sawlog Price Index (conifer sawlogs) reached US$76.77/m³ during the first quarter, with much of the increase attributed to a weaker US dollar. But sawlog costs have also been rising in other currencies, including Finland, Sweden and Germany.

Spruce sawlog prices in Sweden and Germany were 28% and 15% higher in the first quarter than in early 2009.

Sawlog prices in Latvia grew 43% compared to a year ago, while the Czech Republic saw a 25% growth.

Wood Resource Quarterly believes an improvement in lumber markets will lead to continuing sawlog price growth over the coming months.
