The International Wood Products Association (IWPA) has approved a new voluntary veneer grade.

The Product Standard for Imported Rotary Cut Wood Veneer and Platforms supersedes the Product Standard for Imported Wood Veneer and Platforms.

“Taking into account that veneer faces continue to be thinner and thinner, we realised that it was time to overhaul the standard,” said IWPA veneer committee chairman Bronson Newburger.

The new specifications establish minimum acceptable requirements for each grade and reflect the way veneers are being used currently.

“It’s a better explanation of what mills need to know to satisfy customers and what users can expect from suppliers,” said Mr Newburger.

The standard also includes “new language” related to the US Lacey Act, the legislation designed to block illegally-harvested timber being imported into the US.
