SCA Timber Supply says it has become the first wood producer to sign up to the Waste and Resources Action Programme’s “Construction Commitments: Halving Waste to Landfill”.

The industry-wide voluntary agreement is engaged in halving the amount of construction, demolition and excavation sent to landfill by 2012 (against a 2008 baseline).

SCA believes its new commitment with the construction sector will take its resource efficiency drive to the next level.

“Waste costs everyone money,” said Rob Simpson, SCA Timber Supply managing director.

Currently, SCA Welshpool sends little waste to landfill from its various oprations, while at SCA Stoke, mill waste is sent for re-use but operations director Neil Emsley wants to take the concept further.

“If we could get customers to return the bearers underneath packs it would immediately reduce their own wood waste,” he said.

“Even small actions make a difference,” said Bob Bastow, SCA’s environment and quality assurance manager.

“A merchant customer recently highlighted the volume of paperwork we send with orders, so we’re now looking at how best to reduce it.”

SCA’s Swedish sawmill and forestry operations already turn wood waste into biofuels.
