Special timber roof cassettes have been supplied for a £21m sports complex in Scunthorpe.

Consultants for Construction Innovation (C4Ci) helped timber frame system provider Prestoplan design the cassettes for The Pods, which is designed to help establish Scunthorpe as a first-class leisure destination. Intelligent Wood Systems (IWS) was also involved in the project.

The design comprises a number of interconnected geodesic domes similar to the design concept of Cornwall’s Eden Project.

The roof structure is supported by a gulam frame comprising hundreds of interlinked cassettes, installed by main contractor Bowmer & Kirkland.

Timber structural joists within the infill panels were machined on IWS’s Hundegger Speed Cut 3 machine.

The complex will include a 25m swimming pool, a gym, six-court sports hall, dance studio, cafes and a creche.
