An investigation is under way into a fire at a large partly-built timber frame block of flats in Glasgow.

The four-storey structure built by Strathclyde Homes was destroyed in the blaze on August 17 and surrounding homes were evacuated.

The UK Timber Frame Association (UKTFA) said the case was an example of the dangers of leaving a construction site dormant for an extended time.

“Work on the four-storey residential site stopped 18 months ago and since then local reports suggest that the site has been vandalised on many occasions.

“Unfortunately, dormant construction sites are easy prey to vandalism and arson and in the fullness of time we will see what caused this fire.”

The fire was contained within the construction site as firefighters prevented serious fire spreading to nearby flats.

The investigation is being undertaken jointly between Strathclyde Fire & Rescue and Strathclyde Police.

A number of recent fires have occurred in timber frame buildings under construction, with arson usually suspected as the cause.
