Engineered timber roof cassettes have been supplied for the construction of a new Scottish primary school by Carronvale Timberframe.

The Boise BCI-joist cassettes have enabled designers at St Paul’s Primary School in Lanarkshire to achieve the same layout and open areas as would have been possible with a steel frame solution. The roof includes spans of up to 7.5m.

Stephen McGarrity, project leader of RMJM Architects, said the space created by the I-joist section allowed high levels of insulation to be incorporated into the structural fabric of the building.

He said contractor Kier had been keen to use off-site fabrication for the project.

The school, one of a number being built by Kier Scotland under a framework agreement with the local authority, comprises four classrooms and a nursery facility.
