A treated softwood boardwalk is reported to be still performing well after six years in some of the toughest conditions possible close to the western seaboard in County Galway.
The Tanalised E treated boardwalk spans a special conservation area in the Connemara National Park at Letterfrack and is designed to traverse wild and boggy terrain to allow safe public access to Diamond Hill mountain.
Douglas fir timbers from Aughrim Timber were treated with Tanalith E wood preservative in accordance with a 30-year desired service life Irish specification IS 435. Materials had to be airlifted because of the sensitive site, with more than 6,000 airlifts in total.
The complete boardwalk, which also includes sections of gravel and stone, runs to a length of 4,830m.
“This location is providing a test at the most extreme and we are delighted to see that after six years it is still performing as expected,” said Janet Brown, Arch marketing manager.
