Every single piece of the £1m-worth of teak being used to renew the deck of HMS Warrior – Britain’s first metal-hulled battleship – has been individually inspected.
Timbmet has supplied approximately 1,650m2 of teak for the project at the Historic Dockyard, Portsmouth which started last September and is due for completion in October 2003.
The company hosted a reception recently on board the vessel, which was built in 1860, to show guests how work is progressing. Timbmet chairman Dan Kemp told guests that sourcing the teak, which came from Burma, had been a challenge. He said each piece of teak had been individually inspected, and the new deck is expected to last around 75 years.
The teak is replacing a reclaimed pitch pine deck which had been in situ for 25 years.
