Additional guidance for timber importers on timber species covered by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) has been published.

The guidance note issued by the UK CITES Management Authority, viewable in full on The Timber Trade Federation’s website at www.TTF.co.uk, reflects decisions made at the last CITES meeting in Doha in March.

It includes species covered, permit requirements for import and export and certificates.

Timber species covered in the CITES list include African cherry (B listed), Spanish cedar (C or D listed), Brazilian rosewood (B listed), Honduras rosewood (C or D listed), Guatemalan fir (A listed) and lignum vitae (B listed).

Commercial trade in A-listed timbers is generally not permitted, while B-listed items can be traded internationally provided export and import permits have been issued. C and D-listed species are generally being controlled for monitoring purposes.
