Strong decking and fencing sales were recorded by Travis Perkins during 2002, according to the company’s year-end trading update.

Travis Perkins performed well against a “generally favourable market background”, especially in the first four months, followed by a steady second half achievement. The overall group profit margin was more than 11%.

Finance director Paul Hampden Smith said fashionable items such as decking and fencing performed particularly well, with general timber sales also holding up well.

Acquisitions added 99 branches to the network during 2002, about 40 of which sell timber, with the rest concentrating on specialist areas including plumbing and drylining. A total of 610 branches are now trading.

Preliminary 2002 results with full earnings will be released on March 10.
