The shelter adjoins the newly refurbished education centre in Chambers Farm Wood, part of the £1m Lincolnshire Limewoods Project.

It is being used to teach students sustainable building techniques. Students are working with professional woodworker Rob Ley using saws and adzes (a type of prehistoric axe) to turn large timbers into beams, dress and carve them. The finished building is expected to be opened next summer.

Steve Fox, senior lecturer in forestry at Riseholme College, said: “It’s a real root and branch assignment for our students. They’ve helped select and fell oaks in the wood and will now work to fashion them into an eye-catching building that will blend in with the natural surroundings.”
