Sarawak plywood mills are increasing their efforts to gain certification to expand their international market share, according to the International Tropical Timber Organisation’s latest market report.

Out of 42 plywood mills operating in the Malaysian state, 24 have been certified under the Japanese Agricultural Standard, 15 under the California Air Resources Board and 12 under EU standards.

The certification success has been recorded by the Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation.

In the first half of 2010, Sarawak exported 1.46 million m³ of plywood valued at M$2bn (2009: 1.7 million m³/M$1.45bn).

Japan was the largest export market, taking 663,710m³, followed by South Korea with 283,493m³.
