Sawmills in the Russian republic of Karelia are increasing production, with 49,000m³ sawn during March.

The Karelia government said “positive dynamics” in the timber industry were now being observed compared with the beginning of 2009.

Sawmill production was up 172% compared with February, which the government said was caused by “revival of demand in the market”.

Between 17 and 20 mills are now back operational, compared to only eight at the start of the year.

Prime minister Pavel Chernov said the timber industry experienced a failure in December, January and February, but that haulage and processing should now catch up.
