The value of UK softwood imports last year fell just short of the £1bn mark at £946m but represented a 27% growth over 2009, according to an initial Timber Trade Federation (TTF) assessment of 2010.
Hardwood import values reached £240m, a rise of 18%, while hardwood plywood increased by 29%, driven by higher volumes and prices.
Softwood plywood import values grew by 13% – entirely price driven as volumes actually fell.
Chipboard and OSB import values grew by 12%, with OSB price rises outstripping those of particleboard.
The value of MDF imports was virtually identical to values recorded in 2009.
Full in-depth analysis of timber product imports and exports will be provided in the next TTF Timber Statistics, available shortly to TTF members.
