Wood pellet exports from North America to Europe reached 1.6 million tons last year, according to the North American Wood Fiber Review.

This figure represents a doubling of volume compared to 2008.

Canada has been the major overseas supplier of wood pellets to Europe over the last 10 years, reaching about one million tons in 2010. The US only started exporting to Europe in 2008, when 85,000 tons were shipped to the Netherlands, but exports have surged since then, reaching just under 600,000 tons in 2010.

The majority of North American pellets are shipped to the Netherlands (50%), the UK (33%) and Belgium, with occasional shipments to Sweden and Denmark.
