Timber importers on strike in Managlore, India, are demanding tax concessions from the government to make their timber more affordable.

The Karnataka Timber Importers Association says various taxes amounting to about 16% made buying timber in Mangalore more expensive than other states and may reduce domestic demand.

The association is calling for a tax reduction on timber to 8% and an end to a 1.5% multi-point tax and other surcharges. It also wants New Mangalore Port and its surrounding area classified as a free timber sawmill yard.
