Construction at the Olympic Athletes Village has pushed new home registrations to record levels, although adjusted figures still provide good news for the home building sector.

NHBC registrations in March, discounting 2,800 at the Athletes Village, were still the highest they have been in eight months, the NHBC said.

NHBC chief executive Imtiaz Farookhi said the March figures offer encouragement during a month in which the Budget introduced significant changes for housebuilders.

“While a large proportion of registrations were driven by plans at the Athletes Village, housing analysts have reported better than expected growth in house building during the first quarter and our figures certainly reflect this positivity.”

New home registrations in March were 13,307, the highest in more than three years with increases in both the private and public sectors. The total was a 49% increase on February and a 21% increase on March 2010.

The NHBC said the Athletes Village provided a timely boost, however, registrations without the Olympic effect were the highest since July 2010.
