An oak sculpture commissioned by the BBC to commemorate Sir Winston Churchill has been described as “silly” by the wartime prime minister’s grandson Nicholas Soames MP.
The £50,000 timber tower by Paul de Monchaux was labelled undignified and not serious by Mr Soames in an interview with the Daily Mail.
The BBC has defended the work, saying it has not received any complaints from the Churchill family.
Mr de Monchaux’s sculptureis constructed of 20 interlocking pieces of sawn green English oak heartwood and features embedded copies of Churchill’s typewritten speech drafts.
The work is initially being displayed in Westminster Hall at the House of Commons before touring the UK.
