Canadian forest products company AbitibiBowater Inc has reported a net income of C$61m, or $0.63 per diluted share, for the second quarter of 2011.

The positive result compares with a net loss of C$297m, or C$5.15 per diluted share, for the same quarter of 2010.

Sales of C$1.2bn were recorded for the second quarter of 2011, compared to C$1.18bn for the same period of 2010.

Operating income for the period was C$52m, compared to an operating loss of C$73m for the same period of 2010.

Net income for the first half of the year improved – C$91m, or $0.94 per diluted share, compared to a net loss of C$797m, or C$13.83 per diluted share, for the corresponding period of 2010.

First-half sales totalled C$2.4bn, compared to C$2.3bn for the same period of 2010. Year-to-date operating income was C$79m, compared to an operating loss of C$183m for the first half of 2010.
