The UK, central Europe, Nordic countries and Canada are still the dominant players in forest certification, according to a new report presented at a UNECE Timber Committee meeting.
The state of the world’s forests report, shared at the meeting in Turkey meeting on October 10-14, also said North America was currently the largest industrial roundwood remover, accounting for 40% of global roundwood removed. Europe accounts for 23%, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) 9% and the rest of the world 28%.
Total global forest coverage is currently 4 billion ha, 31% of the total land area.
The meeting also saw the presentation of an action plan for the forest sector in a green economy and the launch of the European Forest Sector Outlook Study.
