A new joinery and woodworking school believed to be the first of its kind in the south-east has been launched.

The School of Woodwork has been started by company Listed Joinery following requests by carpentry and renovation clients for training on a wide range of jobs.

Training for all abilities and age groups will be offered across a broad range of carpentry, joinery, woodwork and DIY disciplines.

The school is taking a different approach to conventional carpentry courses, providing a syllabus that gives content-rich, practical lessons at improving skills.

“Over recent years we have been repeatedly asked by our carpentry and renovation clients if short, practical courses existed where they could get a flavour for our trade, or could help them take on projects such as hanging doors,” said school principal David Smith and managing director of Listed Joinery.

“We feel this is a great time to be launching the first specialist school in the south-east. Everyone is suffering in the recession and we’re able to help individuals save a considerable amount of time, money and hassle, as well as having the privilege of imparting some of the secrets and knowledge gathered over the last 30 years.”

The school runs at Hythe-based Listed Joinery, which has been training apprentices for the Construction Industry Training Board since 1992.

Lauretta Winstanley of Construction Skills said the school empowered individuals to embrace the challenge of adopting new skills.

Both Mr Smith and colleague Paul Lilley have City & Guilds of London in Carpentry and Joinery.
