Stora Enso is now officially into the cross laminated timber (CLT) market, after inaugurating its new €18.7m facility in Austria.

The CLT factory, situated next to Stora Enso’s Bad St Leonhard sawmill, can produce 65,000m³ annually – enough to build 1,160 detached houses.

“Thanks to CLT we can access the quickly growing solid wood construction markets in Europe,” said Peter Kickinger, executive vice-president of Stora Enso Timber.

“This is also a significant step forward for the whole Bad St Leonhard production facility. Starting CLT production is an excellent example of our strategy to produce more and more added value to concentrate on our customers.”

CLT products can be 3m wide and 16m long, with panels made from three, five or seven layers of laminated wood. They are typically used for wall, floor and roof sections.
