The value of US softwood exports to the UK were up 12% to US$4.5m in the first nine months of 2011.
American Softwoods said the US Department of Commerce’s statistics show that the value of US softwood exports to the UK could be on course for a 20% annual growth by the end of the year.
The most popular species in the UK continues to be southern yellow pine, with exports worth US$1.5m, followed by other pine species (US$1m) and Douglas fir (US$899,000). Hemlock was up 19%, while fir grew 187% to US$194,000.
“With the new programme of promotion under way this year, we have been working hard to show that species such as southern yellow pine, Douglas fir and hemlock offer real advantages and benefits in a wide range of applications,” said American Softwoods UK director Charles Trevor.
