Forestry companies in the Philippines have been urged to focus on their domestic market instead of exporting to New Zealand.

The advice has come from New Zealand’s ambassador to the country Terry Baker, who told delegates at a forestry conference in Mindanao to work together to tap their local markets.

Statistics compiled by the University of Asia and the Pacific show 49% of the Philippines’ roundwood imports came from New Zealand in 2001 and 42% in 2002.
