James Callander & Son Ltd of Falkirk has applied for outline planning permission to locate a new sawmill on a 40-acre site in the village of Cowie near Stirling. The proposal also includes plans for a boiler house, drying kilns and timber treatment plant. If approved, the project would create an additional 23 jobs, according to the sawmiller.

The proposed site is close to the Nexfor chipboard plant in the same village – which already consumes James Callander’s residues – and therefore the move would “considerably reduce” road transport movements, according to the local planning officer. A report from Stirling Council’s head of planning and environmental strategy Mick Stewart recommended approval of the scheme on economic grounds.

The application is scheduled to be considered again at a council planning panel meeting on August 21.
