BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group has won an architectural design competion for the renovation and expansion of the Kimball Art Center in Utah.

The project comprises an interior renovation of the existing centre and the construction of a new, adjacent building.

The new building will be made of massive stacked timber elements reclaimed from train track piles from the Great Salt Lake.

The timber planks will be stacked at a slight spiral so that the 80ft building will appear to twist. It will enclose a cantilevered wooden staircase leading to various gallery floors and a roof terrace above.

The project is expected to begin in mid-2013 and completed in mid-2015.
