All tree felling and cutting in the Indian islands of Andaman and Nicobar has been banned following pressure from the Pune-based NGO Kalpavriksh.
It has persuaded the Supreme Court of India to pass an order aimed at saving the environmentally sensitive forest cover of the twin islands. This will result in a ban on movement of logs and timber and the issue of licences to sawmills and wood-based industries after March 2003.
