Stewart Milne Timber Systems showed you don’t necessarily need huge walls to achieve good energy efficiency and sound reduction, with the launch of new open panel build products.

Top of the billing was a single-skin party wall, which managing director Alex Goodfellow says performs 10% better than acoustic regulation requirements, in part due to novel slots cut in the OSB web of its Sigma C-studs.

The open-panel systems, designed to meet a wide range of budgets and specifications, use insulation combinations to achieve high performance and reduce the cost of foundations.

An 89mm stud can achieve a U-value of 0.16W/m²K when glasswool fills the void and Knauf insulated plasterboard – 12.5mm plasterboard bonded to 45mm Kingspan polyurethane insulation – is fixed as the internal lining. Bonding the plasterboard and insulation is done by Proctors.

The other advantage is each panel weighs less than 100kg and can be moved by hand.

Stewart Milne also exhibited magnesium oxide (MGO) sheathing board, which is a fire-reduction option for building sites. MGO board supplier Dragonboard also exhibited at Ecobuild.

“We’ve taken about £20m worth of orders in the last four months, back to levels we enjoyed at the peak [of the building boom],” said Mr Goodfellow.

“But I’m not saying we’re back to peak volumes, we’ve done it by taking market share and having appropriate products that customers want.”
