The Wood Awards will be able to raise its profile and further highlight advances in UK timber building and design thanks to Canada Wood joining the ranks of its lead sponsors.

The value of the new backing for the annual competition for the use of timber in construction, interiors and design has not been disclosed, but Wood Awards organiser Lucy Kamall has confirmed that it puts Canada Wood alongside The American Hardwood Export Council, Carpenters’ Company and Wood for Good as one of the major financial supporters.

Canada Wood provides promotional, educational and technical support to the market on behalf of six major Canadian timber sector organisations and said they were “enthusiastically committed to the Wood Awards”.

“As a major global producer of wood and wood products from a vast, diverse and sustainably-managed forest resource, and with a centuries-old trading relationship with the UK our support is a natural fit,” said Canada Wood UK managing director John Park. “We are also increasingly focused on market development as well as access, and the Wood Awards is the most glamorous, cost-effective, focused and exciting way of selling wood to a specifier audience!”

Ms Kamall said securing “more backing of the calibre of our existing major sponsors” was exciting for the Awards and the timber industry.

“It will allow us to undertake a number of new activities to raise awareness of the competition, but also to give additional exposure to the entries,” she said.

Mr Park said he hoped Canada Wood’s support for the Awards would attract other sponsorship, particularly from individual companies. “This benefits the whole industry, so it has to be a collective effort,” he said.

The Wood Awards entry deadline is June 1. The winners will be announced on November 27 at The Carpenters’ Hall.
