The largest hardwood sawmill in Nova Scotia is to close its doors before Christmas with about 40 workers losing their jobs.

Groupe Savoie said poor market conditions and a shortage of saw logs was to blame for the decision to close the 71,000m³ sawn capacity Westville mill on December 10.

But the company said reopening the mill in the spring was a possibility. In the meantime is examining ways to improve efficiency in its operations, which includes mills in New Brunswick (sawn capacity of 70,000m³) and Tennessee (83,000m³ sawn capacity).

Group Savoie processes hard maple, yellow and white birch, red maple and aspen into a range of products including lumber, hardwood components and pallets.
