Fying Squad detectives have failed to find gold ingots from the Brink’s Mat robbery following a swoop on south coast timber and builders merchant R Winchester & Son last week.

The Scotland Yard team spent five days digging up the yard of the Hastings’ merchant but did not uncover any of the gold bars that sources had suggested were buried at the site.

The officers also dug up the foundations of the offices of the business’s owner Ronald ‘Yonky’ Winchester, who also owns a nursery in the area and from whom a Flying Squad spokesman said they had had full co-operation.

National newspapers attributed the raid to a tip-off from a man convicted of handling some of the proceeds from the 1983 robbery.
