The Brazilian government is revising its “Plan to Combat Deforestation in Amazonia” after new data showed the rate of deforestation had accelerated in 2007, according to Friends of the Earth – Brazilian Amazon.

Satellite images have shown that between June and September the rate of deforestation in the state of Mato Grosso increased by 107% compared to the same period in 2006, with the Acre and Rondônia states seeing a 3% and 53% rise respectively.

As such, the government has moved to enforce command and control measures in the Pará, Mato Grosso and Rondônia states, create working relationship with municipalities where the deforestation rate is highest and bring in financial incentives to promote sustainable logging.

The revised Plan to Combat Deforestation in Amazonia is due to be published in 2008.
